摘要: This study aimed to investigate the level of correlations (if any) between the use of learning strategies and factors of language proficiency and gender for Taiwanese EFL university students. The subjects of this study were freshmen non-majors in a university in southern Taiwan. The results showed that there was no significant difference between genders in terms of use of learning strategies; however, language proficiency level had a statistically significant influence on strategy use. Moreover, the study also revealed variance in the use of learning strategies between proficient learners and less proficient ones, with conspicuous differences found in their use of memory, cognitive and compensation strategies, with higher-proficiency students using the three strategies more often than the lower-proficiency students. Lastly, the study also found that the subjects on the whole did not exert learning strategies frequently for their language learning with only compensation and social strategies slightly over the mean. It is hoped that the findings can serve as references for English teachers teaching non-majors and enable them to identify the learning strategies best suited for their students use and instruction.
