摘要: The purpose of the present study is to investigate adults’ strategy use in reading picture books. Three proficient and three less proficient adults were asked to read picture books about a literal-minded housekeeper with an interesting plot and language play for the developing readers. The participants were required to verbalize their on-going thoughts while reading the passages. Before, think-aloud, the participants also took a comprehension test. An analysis of the think-aloud protocols and comprehension scores reveal that 17 types of strategies were collected from the participants and the most frequently used strategy for both groups was paragraph. When experiencing difficulty, proficient readers used a variety of strategies to cope with their problems, whereas less proficient readers used word-level cues and focused on the decoding part of reading. Besides, proficient readers utilized more types of strategies more frequently while less proficient readers utilized fewer types of strategies due to the inhibiting effect of limited language competence on strategy use.
